Fraternity Movement Demands the immediate revoke of all Charges against Sharjeel Usmani and Sharjeel Imam. We believe that legitimate protest is a constitutional right, which cannot be diverted through Propaganda and lies that are Islamophobic in nature.
Sharjeel Usmani, one of the Secretaries of Fraternity Movement, an ex student of AMU and the leading student voice of the struggle against CAA, NRC & NPR and has been under the witch hunt of the UP police since the start of the protests.
He has been under constant police surveillance with the police going in an out of his house with no adherence to any legal procedure or respect for the rights of citizens. UP police has been the most violent in its attempts to supress the protests with sheer impunity under Yogis regime.
Sharjeel Imam, one of the vocal student activists, who articulates a critique of CAA, NRC & NPR along with active mobilisation of the masses, has been booked with UAPA.
Sharjeel has been at the forefront in the fight against the regime’s attempt to make legal an apartheid law that targets to render Muslims stateless. He is in line with several others (including students of Jamia and Aligarh) who have been targeted by the state for their unflinching stand against this unjust law. The attempt to criminalse and brand Sharjeel anti-national had been taken up through sheer fake propoganda by the media by spreading the idea that he masterminded historic Shaheen Bagh protests. Such fake reportage and blatant attempt to sabotage the ongoing protests (by calling him the ‘mastermind’ with Islamophobic undertones) were not seen as ‘illegal’ or criminal. instead of that, Sharjeel who is the victim of jinigoistic hatred has been criminalised.
We demand revocation of unjust criminal charges not just against Sharjeel Imam and Sharjeel Usmani, but for all who have been targeted by the state.
